Wedding dress shopping is one of those experiences you’ve probably imagined long before you ever booked your first bridal appointment. You’ve saved the Pinterest photos, watched the “say yes” videos, and maybe even have a pretty good idea of what you think the dress will look like.

But after almost 27 years of helping brides find their gowns, we can tell you there are a few things we wish every bride—and every person coming along with her—knew before walking through the doors of a bridal boutique.

Consider these our lovingly delivered “brutal truths” about wedding dress shopping. They might just make your experience that much better.

Your Pinterest Board Is Inspiration, Not a Guarantee

Pinterest is an amazing place to start gathering inspiration. It can help you recognize patterns in what you’re drawn to—necklines, silhouettes, fabrics, embellishments and overall bridal aesthetic.

But the dress you love in a perfectly styled photo may feel completely different once you put something similar on your own body. And that’s okay!

In fact, one of our favorite parts of a bridal appointment is watching a bride discover that something she never expected to love is actually her dress .

Use your Pinterest board as a starting point rather than a checklist. If you have your heart set on a very specific or unique style, reach out to the boutique before your appointment to make sure they carry gowns that align with your vision. It can save everyone from unnecessary disappointment.

If You Aren’t Ready to Buy, You May Not Be Ready to Shop

We know this one can sound a little harsh, but hear us out.

Wedding dress shopping “just to look” can create more confusion than clarity—especially if you aren't emotionally or financially prepared to say yes.

You could fall completely in love with a gown only to discover that it has been discontinued, sold off the rack, or is otherwise unavailable by the time you’re ready to purchase. Or you may spend months comparing every dress you try on to one you weren't ready to commit to.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with waiting.

Before booking your appointment, have a general idea of your wedding date, your gown budget and whether you’re genuinely comfortable purchasing if you find the right dress.

Please Skip the Spray Tan Before Your Appointment

We love a fresh tan, too. We just don't love it transferred onto a wedding gown.

Bridal boutiques work incredibly hard to keep their sample gowns beautiful, especially because some of those dresses may eventually be purchased by a bride directly off the rack.

Bronzers, self-tanners and freshly applied spray tans can transfer onto light-colored fabrics surprisingly easily.

Our recommendation? Avoid bronzers and spray tans for at least 48 hours before your bridal appointment.

Guests: This Is the Bride’s Appointment

Bringing your favorite people wedding dress shopping can make the experience incredibly special. But there’s one important thing for guests to remember:

You’re there to support her.

One of the most disheartening things we see is a bride stepping out of the fitting room excited about a gown, only to find empty seats while her guests are wandering through the racks pulling dresses they want to see her in.

While we love letting guests help choose a few gowns at the beginning of the appointment, after that, we encourage you to sit back, relax, and let her stylist take the lead. Your stylist knows the inventory inside and out—including which gowns are available in sizes the bride can comfortably try on and which styles fall within her budget.

Pulling gowns without that knowledge can sometimes create an uncomfortable situation where a bride falls in love with a dress that is significantly outside her budget or feels discouraged when a gown simply isn’t available in a sample size that works for her.

It’s never about limiting the bride’s options—it’s about making sure the options we bring her are ones she can realistically feel amazing in and say yes to.

So once the appointment gets going, stay present, enjoy the moment, and trust her stylist to do the pulling. Most importantly, remember that while everyone may have a vision for the bride, the final choice should always be hers.

Don't Rush the Experience

Your bridal appointment shouldn't feel like one more item squeezed into an already packed Saturday.

Give yourself room to enjoy it.

When you’re distracted, watching the clock or worrying about where you need to be next, it becomes much harder to slow down and actually pay attention to how you feel in each gown.

If possible, avoid stacking multiple commitments around your bridal appointment. Grab lunch afterward. Celebrate with your people. Give yourself time to enjoy a milestone that only happens once.

Wedding planning can become one giant to-do list if you let it. Finding your wedding dress deserves to be one of the moments you actually experience.

Trust Your Bridal Stylist

Your stylist knows those racks better than anyone.

She knows which gowns run differently, which silhouettes might accomplish what you're describing, which dresses have customization possibilities and which options fall within your budget.

Sometimes the dress she brings into your fitting room won't make sense to you on the hanger.

Try it anyway.

One of the most exciting parts of finding your wedding dress is discovering that sometimes, the dress you love can become even more you .

Maybe you love the silhouette but dream of adding sleeves. Maybe you’d prefer a different neckline, want to change the lining, add buttons, extend the train, or borrow a detail from another gown you fell in love with. Depending on the designer, many of these changes are possible through a custom order .

Customizations can be an amazing way to create a gown that is uniquely yours—but before deciding to make changes, there are a few things every bride should understand about the process.

What Does “Custom” Really Mean?

In bridal, the word custom can mean a few different things.

At Sara Loree’s, when we talk about customizing a designer gown, we are typically talking about requesting changes to an existing gown at the time your dress is ordered . Your stylist communicates those requests to the designer, and the designer creates your gown with the approved changes.

Depending on the designer and gown, this could include things like changing a neckline, adding or removing sleeves or straps, changing a fabric or lining, extending a train, adding buttons, modifying lace placement, or combining elements from different gowns.

Not every designer offers the same customization options. Your stylist will work with you and the designer to determine what can be done and what additional costs may be involved.

The Most Important Thing to Understand About Customizations

When you customize a gown, you are not able to try on the exact finished version before placing your order.

Your stylist can pin, clip, tuck, add fabric, show inspiration photos, compare other gowns, and help you visualize the change as much as possible. But ultimately, you are imagining how those changes will come together on the finished dress.

And that's an important distinction.

You may have a very specific picture in your mind of how every detail will look. Your stylist will communicate that vision to the designer as clearly as possible, but the designer is ultimately the one physically creating the gown and interpreting the approved customization.

Most of the time, the result is beautiful and exactly what our bride hoped for. Occasionally, though, something may look or feel a little different in person than what you imagined—and that doesn't necessarily mean the gown was made incorrectly.

Sometimes you simply can't know exactly how you'll feel about a design choice until you're standing in front of the mirror wearing it.

Your Eyes Get Used to the Sample, Too.

This is something brides don't always expect, but it's something we see more often than you might think.

After saying “yes,” it can be tempting to spend the next several months looking back at every photo and video you took in the sample gown. You show them to your family and friends, look at them while choosing accessories, and revisit them anytime you're excited to see your dress again.

Without realizing it, that exact version of the dress can become the dress you picture yourself wearing.

That's why, especially when you've ordered custom changes, we actually recommend deleting—or at least putting away—the photos of yourself in the original sample gown after your order is placed.

Once you've made the decision to customize your dress, we want you to give yourself the freedom to fall in love with your gown when it arrives rather than spending months comparing it to a sample that was never exactly your dress to begin with.

Remember: The Sample Probably Didn't Fit You Perfectly

There's another reason we don't want you to rely too heavily on photos from your original appointment: the sample gown you tried on may not have been your size.

During a bridal appointment, we use clips and other styling techniques to help you visualize how a gown will look when it fits properly. They do an amazing job of helping create that vision in the moment, but they can't perfectly replicate the proportions of a gown actually made in your ordered size.

For example, if a sample bodice is several sizes too large and is clipped tightly in the back, a photo from the front may make the neckline appear wider than it will be when your correctly sized gown arrives. Your actual gown needs the appropriate width and proportions to fit your body.

The opposite can happen with a sample that's too small. If the back can't close completely, you may not be seeing the full back design, the correct placement of details, or how the gown is intended to sit when properly fitted.

Clipping can also affect where straps sit, where seams fall, how the waistline hits, and even the overall proportions of the gown.

A clipped sample is a visualization tool—not an exact preview of how your finished gown will fit.

This becomes especially important when customizations are involved. If you've spent months studying a photo of yourself in an incorrectly sized and clipped sample, you may unintentionally create a very specific expectation of how your customized gown should look. We've even seen brides realize that they miss the very detail they originally chose to change. That's completely understandable. After looking at the same photos for months, your brain becomes familiar with that version of the dress.

So once you've said yes, made your customization decisions, and placed your order, trust the decisions you made with your stylist and give your finished gown a chance to have its own moment.

When your dress arrives, we want you looking in the mirror at your gown —not looking at your phone comparing it to a sample that was never made for you.

What If I Want to Change Something When My Dress Arrives?

First: tell your stylist.

We cannot emphasize this enough.

Your stylist is on your team. If your gown arrives and there is something about a customization that you aren't completely loving, being open and honest gives us the opportunity to help you determine what options may be available.

Sometimes a small alteration makes all the difference. A neckline can potentially be adjusted, a strap may need to sit differently, a piece of lace might need repositioned, or a detail may simply need to be tailored specifically to your body before the entire vision comes together.

Other situations may require us to communicate with the designer or explore additional solutions.

This is exactly why your "Meet the Dress" appointment is so important. It's your opportunity to see your actual gown on your body and talk through how everything looks and feels with your stylist.

Your Stylist Is Your Advocate

One thing we always want our brides to understand is that your stylist does not physically manufacture your wedding gown.

Her job is to listen to your vision, help determine what is possible, accurately communicate your approved requests to the designer, and advocate for you throughout the ordering process.

When your gown arrives, we're still on your team.

If something doesn't look the way you envisioned, please don't feel like you have to smile and say you love it because you're worried about hurting your stylist's feelings. We would much rather know how you're truly feeling so we can help.

At the same time, it's important to remember that disliking how a customization looks in person doesn't necessarily mean your stylist—or the designer—did something wrong. Sometimes the request was completed exactly as ordered, but seeing that idea come to life feels different than imagining it.

That's part of the inherent unknown that comes with customizing a gown you haven't been able to try on in its finished form.

Should You Customize Your Wedding Dress?

If the answer is yes, you're starting from a wonderful place.

Customizations can create some of the most beautiful, personal gowns we've ever seen. We've watched brides take a dress they already loved and turn it into something that feels like it was truly made for them.

The key is going into the process with excitement, trust, realistic expectations, and an open line of communication with your stylist.

Your dream dress doesn't always have to start out exactly as you imagined it.

Sometimes, it becomes your dream dress along the way.

Why are we Sharing This?

If you've already ordered a gown with customizations, none of this is meant to make you nervous or second-guess the decisions you made.

In our experience, disappointment with custom changes is very rare . The overwhelming majority of our custom gowns arrive beautifully, and there is truly nothing better than watching a bride see the details she dreamed about come to life for the first time.

We share this information because we believe our brides deserve transparency throughout the entire process—including conversations about the possibilities that aren't as common.

Customizing a wedding gown requires imagination and trust because there isn't an exact sample of your finished dress for you to try on before it is made. While your stylist and designer will do everything possible to communicate and execute your vision, there will always be a small element of the unknown when you're creating something you haven't physically seen yet.

That doesn't mean you should be afraid to customize your gown. We absolutely love customizations and will continue recommending them when we feel they can help a bride create the dress she's envisioning.

We simply never want to promise that “custom” automatically means “perfect the moment it arrives.” Sometimes your gown may still need the finishing touches of alterations. Sometimes seeing a design choice in person feels a little different than imagining it. And in the rare instance that something doesn't feel quite right, we want you to know that you can tell us.

Our goal isn't to eliminate every possible unknown—that simply isn't realistic when creating something custom. Our goal is to make sure you're educated, prepared, supported, and comfortable being honest with us throughout the process.

So if you've already ordered your custom gown, don't spend the next several months worrying about the “what ifs.” Trust the decisions you made when you were standing in that dress, surrounded by people who were excited for you. Put away those sample photos, resist the urge to analyze every little detail, and let yourself be excited to meet your version of the gown.
