How to Have the Best Wedding Dress Shopping Experience

Wedding dress shopping is one of those experiences you’ve probably imagined long before you ever booked your first bridal appointment. You’ve saved the Pinterest photos, watched the “say yes” videos, and maybe even have a pretty good idea of what you think the dress will look like.

But after almost 27 years of helping brides find their gowns, we can tell you there are a few things we wish every bride—and every person coming along with her—knew before walking through the doors of a bridal boutique.

Consider these our lovingly delivered “brutal truths” about wedding dress shopping. They might just make your experience that much better.

Your Pinterest Board Is Inspiration, Not a Guarantee

Pinterest is an amazing place to start gathering inspiration. It can help you recognize patterns in what you’re drawn to—necklines, silhouettes, fabrics, embellishments and overall bridal aesthetic.

But the dress you love in a perfectly styled photo may feel completely different once you put something similar on your own body. And that’s okay!

In fact, one of our favorite parts of a bridal appointment is watching a bride discover that something she never expected to love is actually her dress.

Use your Pinterest board as a starting point rather than a checklist. If you have your heart set on a very specific or unique style, reach out to the boutique before your appointment to make sure they carry gowns that align with your vision. It can save everyone from unnecessary disappointment.

If You Aren’t Ready to Buy, You May Not Be Ready to Shop

We know this one can sound a little harsh, but hear us out.

Wedding dress shopping “just to look” can create more confusion than clarity—especially if you aren't emotionally or financially prepared to say yes.

You could fall completely in love with a gown only to discover that it has been discontinued, sold off the rack, or is otherwise unavailable by the time you’re ready to purchase. Or you may spend months comparing every dress you try on to one you weren't ready to commit to.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with waiting.

Before booking your appointment, have a general idea of your wedding date, your gown budget and whether you’re genuinely comfortable purchasing if you find the right dress.

Please Skip the Spray Tan Before Your Appointment

We love a fresh tan, too. We just don't love it transferred onto a wedding gown.

Bridal boutiques work incredibly hard to keep their sample gowns beautiful, especially because some of those dresses may eventually be purchased by a bride directly off the rack.

Bronzers, self-tanners and freshly applied spray tans can transfer onto light-colored fabrics surprisingly easily.

Our recommendation? Avoid bronzers and spray tans for at least 48 hours before your bridal appointment.

Our boutique—and the brides shopping after you—will appreciate it.

Guests: This Is the Bride’s Appointment

Bringing your favorite people wedding dress shopping can make the experience incredibly special. But there’s one important thing for guests to remember:

You’re there to support her.

One of the most disheartening things we see is a bride stepping out of the fitting room excited about a gown, only to find empty seats while her guests are wandering through the racks pulling dresses they want to see her in.

While we love letting guests help choose a few gowns at the beginning of the appointment, after that, we encourage you to sit back, relax, and let her stylist take the lead. Your stylist knows the inventory inside and out—including which gowns are available in sizes the bride can comfortably try on and which styles fall within her budget.

Pulling gowns without that knowledge can sometimes create an uncomfortable situation where a bride falls in love with a dress that is significantly outside her budget or feels discouraged when a gown simply isn’t available in a sample size that works for her.

It’s never about limiting the bride’s options—it’s about making sure the options we bring her are ones she can realistically feel amazing in and say yes to.

So once the appointment gets going, stay present, enjoy the moment, and trust her stylist to do the pulling. Most importantly, remember that while everyone may have a vision for the bride, the final choice should always be hers.

Don't Rush the Experience

Your bridal appointment shouldn't feel like one more item squeezed into an already packed Saturday.

Give yourself room to enjoy it.

When you’re distracted, watching the clock or worrying about where you need to be next, it becomes much harder to slow down and actually pay attention to how you feel in each gown.

If possible, avoid stacking multiple commitments around your bridal appointment. Grab lunch afterward. Celebrate with your people. Give yourself time to enjoy a milestone that only happens once.

Wedding planning can become one giant to-do list if you let it. Finding your wedding dress deserves to be one of the moments you actually experience.

Trust Your Bridal Stylist

Your stylist knows those racks better than anyone.

She knows which gowns run differently, which silhouettes might accomplish what you're describing, which dresses have customization possibilities and which options fall within your budget.

Sometimes the dress she brings into your fitting room won't make sense to you on the hanger.

Try it anyway.

A great bridal stylist isn't trying to convince you to love something you don't. She's listening to what you're saying, watching your reactions and using that information to narrow down what makes you feel your best.

You don't have to know exactly what you're looking for. That's what she's there to help you figure out.

There Will Always Be Another Dress

This may be the hardest truth in the age of endless scrolling.

There will always be another wedding dress.

Another designer will release a collection. Another gown will appear on your Explore page. Another bride will post something beautiful. Another boutique will have another rack you haven't looked through.

If you approach wedding dress shopping determined to see every possible option before making a decision, you may never feel finished.

At some point, finding your dress requires trusting yourself.

If you feel beautiful, comfortable, confident and like yourself in a gown, don't let the fear of “but what if there's something else?” steal that feeling from you.

There will always be more dresses.

There won't be another first time finding yours.

Guests, Let the Bride Speak First

We saved one of the most important for last.

When the bride walks out in a new gown, give her a moment to decide how she feels before telling her how you feel.

A facial expression, an immediate “I don't like that one,” or even a seemingly harmless comment can completely change how she sees a dress before she's had the opportunity to process it herself.

Remember that your personal taste doesn't have to be hers.

You might prefer fitted gowns while she feels incredible in a ball gown. You may love lace while she's realizing she wants something completely clean and modern.

And while it should go without saying, comments about the bride's body should never be part of the conversation.

Instead, ask her:

“How do YOU feel in this one?”

Then listen.

Your job that day isn't to make sure she chooses the dress you would wear. It's to help her feel confident enough to choose the dress she wants to wear.

The Best Bridal Appointments Aren't About Finding a “Perfect” Dress

They're about creating an environment where a bride feels comfortable enough to figure out what makes her feel like herself.

Come prepared, but keep an open mind. Bring people who will support you rather than overwhelm you. Give yourself permission to fall in love with something unexpected. And when you find a gown that makes you feel the way you've been hoping to feel, trust yourself enough to say yes.

And remember: your bridal stylist is always on your team.

She wants you to leave your appointment feeling excited, confident and completely in love with the dress you'll get to wear on one of the biggest days of your life.

Prom 2027 is coming in bold , and after getting a look this week at what’s ahead for the upcoming season, we can already tell this is going to be a FUN year for prom fashion. While we’ll always love a classic prom look, Spring 2027 is giving girls permission to have a little more fun with their dress. Think statement prints, unexpected fabrics, romantic details and silhouettes that are made to stand out. If you’re already thinking about your 2027 prom dress (we don’t blame you!), here are some of the biggest trends you can expect to see this season. 🌅 Ombré Is Having a Major Moment Why choose one color when you can have two… or three? Ombré fabrics are making a major entrance for Prom 2027, and we are here for it. Instead of a solid color from top to bottom, these gowns gradually transition from one shade into another, creating a look that feels dreamy, dimensional and a little unexpected. Depending on the colors and fabric, ombré can go soft and romantic or completely bold and dramatic. It’s also one of those trends that looks AMAZING in photos—which never hurts when you’re choosing a prom dress. 🌸 Florals Are Back (But Make Them Prom) Florals for spring may not exactly be groundbreaking…but Prom 2027 is giving them a whole new personality. We’re seeing floral prints that feel colorful, feminine and playful, along with floral details that turn a gown into something really special. If you’re the girl who normally gravitates toward a solid-color dress, this might just be the year a floral print changes your mind. And trust us: try the floral on. Prints can look completely different on the hanger than they do once you’re wearing them. 💃 Tiered Skirts Bring the Drama If your dream prom dress involves making an entrance, keep an eye out for tiered, ruffled skirts . Layers of fabric create tons of movement and volume without necessarily making a gown feel heavy. The result is a silhouette that feels SO fun to twirl in. This time around, we’re seeing a few fun, flirty takes on the trend that feel fresh, youthful and perfect for spring. We don’t expect two-pieces to take over the racks this season, but that’s part of what makes them so fun. There’s something about a polka-dot prom dress that manages to feel retro, feminine and fashion-forward all at once. We’re seeing dots incorporated into gowns in ways that feel fresh rather than costume-y, making them perfect for the girl who wants something different without going completely outside her comfort zone. Consider us officially on Team Polka Dot. The Biggest Prom 2027 Trend? Personality. If there’s one thing we’re noticing about Spring 2027, it’s that prom fashion is becoming a lot more individual . You don’t have to choose the same sparkly fitted dress everyone else is wearing. Maybe you’re an ombré girl. Maybe you want a huge tiered skirt. Maybe you fall in love with florals. Or maybe you walk into the fitting room wearing a leopard-print prom dress and suddenly realize you were a leopard-print girl all along. Our biggest advice? Don’t be afraid to try the wildcard.
